This or That – Around the World on Wednesday

Notes of Nature Bundle consists of a co-ordinating stamp set and die set from the Stampin’ Up!® Jan-Apr 2024 Mini Catalogue. This fabulous bundle is only available until the end of April 2024 and I am using it for the Around the World on Wednesday blog hop this month.

Welcome once again to Around the World on Wednesday Blog Hop, travelling around the world through every time zone. You may be starting your trip Around the World here or you may have come from the blog of amazing artist Rochelle Laird-Smith. Always excited to see what Rochelle has created.

Around the World on Wednesday Blog Hop is the brainchild of Angie McKenzie, a wonderful friend and amazing paper artist. My name is Cheryll Miller, and I am so delighted to be a part of this varied and talented group of Stampin’ Up!® Demonstrators.

This month, the AWOW team are working to a “This or That” theme, exploring our creative processes.

This, or this, or that …

Here are three cards, a progression of different ideas to try and fix the first card (which I didn’t like). I haven’t really changed the basic card up too much except for colour changes and some subtle other changes. And strangely … after all the re-works, I like the first one the best. Go figure!!!

The “this” …

Those who have followed my creative journey know that I have a relatively predictable style … lots of flowers, carefully placed elements, inky techniques, safe colour combinations, everything in it’s place.

Just lately, I have been feeling the need to stretch the boundaries … so I pulled out some colours I wouldn’t normally use together … Granny Apple Green, Azure Afternoon and Sweet Sorbet … all very bright, primary type colours. And then I proceeded to try some off kilter layering … waaaay out of my comfort zone. This was the result. I did post this card in another hop earlier in the month … and really just wasn’t happy with it.

So I asked my wonderful team members “how should I re-work this card to fix it”. They came up with some fabulous ideas.

Here is how I created the original card. The idea was to use the “Just a little note to say hello” sentiment, highlighting the hello with a contrast colour “Sweet Sorbet”.

  • Place a piece of tape over the “hello” part of the sentiment and ink up the image with Azure Afternoon ink. Remove the tape and colour the word hello with Sweet Sorbet Stampin’ Write Marker. Stamp onto Basic White card. Die cut with the smallest of the Deckled Rectangle dies.
  • Stamp the grid image from Notes of Nature around the edges of the sentiment panel with Granny Apple Green ink. Use Small Blending Brush to add Granny Apple Green ink around the edges of the panel.
  • Use the Notes of Nature stamp set to create a collage panel with Granny Apple Green and Azure Afternoon inks, die cut with a Deckled Rectangle. Use Small Blending Brush to add Grannny Apple Green ink around the edges of the panel.
  • To accentuate the leaves, use a Blender Brush and Granny Apple Green ink to add licks of colour into the leaves.
  • To add the Sweet Sorbet word “hello” multiple times over the panel, make sure the sentiment stamp is very clean and then ink up the word hello with Sweet Sorbet ink before stamping each time.
  • The background layer is Granny Apple Green cardstock die cut with a larger Decked Rectangle die, stamped with the grid stamp and splatter images from Notes of Nature stamp set and Azure Afternoon ink, the edges sponged with Azure Afternoon ink.
  • The Notes of Nature dies includes a long die to cut holes and perforated line … I used that across the bottom of this layer and then threaded the Gold Faux Leather Trim through, tying a knot at each end. Glue dots help kep the knots in place.
  • I layered all the pieces at angles onto a piece of Gold patterned Designer Series Paper from the Nature’s Happiness Specialty Designer Series Paper … the two top layers are popped up with dimensionals.
  • I also added some die cut leaves from the Notes of Nature dies, cut with Granny Apple Green and Fold Foil.
  • Some shiny embellishments complete the card.

I decorated the inside in a similar manner, using the largest Deckled Rectangle Die to cut the stamped layer.

Here are the other two cards … can you tell what I did differently? And let me know in the comments which is your favourite, or if you think I should have just given up after the first card! 😉

The “or this” …

So some of the girls suggested “too much green” …. so under supervision, I changed up the collage and sentiment panels by adding Azure Afternoon sponging around the edges. We did try an Azure Afternoon panel as the background, but it was just too much blue! So green it was again.
The only other change was that I stamped all the “hello’s” off-kilter to match the off-kilter layers.

The “or that” …

Trish suggested I use a less intense colour in the background … so I swapped out the Granny Apple Green for Coastal Cabana. The sentiment is stamped with Coastal Cabana, and the collage panel is stamped with Granny Apple Green and Coastal Cabana. Edges are sponged with Coastal Cabana, and the contrast “hello’s” are stamped with Azure Afternoon.
I also made the collage stamped panel a larger size … what do you think? Does this make all the difference?

  • You make it tough to decide! Despite all the tweaks and titivations, it’s number 1 that I come back to as favourite. I think it’s because I like the brightness of the green you’ve picked, I prefer the angle of the sentiment and that there’s enough inking on the white panel to tie things together but not so much that it merges into the background. However, I’d still be more than happy to receive any one of them. 🙂

  • I just love the “this” and the “or this” and the “that”. Love them all. And we were really channeling with the greens hihi.

  • I love how your projects came together and the “help” you had. All fabulous projects and truly beautiful and unique!!

    • Aw, thanks Leonie! Not my usual thing, but I guess good to try something different every now and then! 🙂 xxx

  • This, that or the other?!?! So many amazing cards! I love the Azure Afternoon version. There is just something about that blue that draws me in! Great work on all three cards.
