The card I have created for my blog hop project is totally different, using a fabulous inking technique and very different colours … showing the versatility of this suite.

Sweet Symmetry Suite

The technique used to create the background for this card is one I saw used by the fabulously talented Sara Levin of The Artful Inker. She calls it the “faux oxide ink technique”, or if you are a long time stamper like myself, the finish resembles Colorbox Chalk Inks. Here is a link to her original blog post, which includes a video on how she created the background.

Design Tips

  • The background layer is created by applying Whisper White Craft Ink all over a piece of Basic White Thick cardstock, simply press the ink pad onto the cardstock until it is fully covered.
  • I used two colours for the background, Polished Pink and Gorgeous Grape. They are applied with sponge daubers, and the only difference to Sara’s technique was that I applied ink to acrylic blocks and picked up the ink with the dauber from the block. That way I avoided adding any of the white ink to the top of my ink pad (although it is easy to remove with a piece of paper towel if you do get any white ink on the surface of your ink pad). I blended the two colours together with the sponge daubers.
  • I loved the splatter effect Sara created simply by flicking some water over the background. The ink colour lifts and shows the white ink behind. Once dried with a heat tool, both the background and the white splatter fade back somewhat.
  • I recommend ensuring the background is quite dry before stamping. I used Gorgeous Grape ink to stamp images from the In Symmetry stamp set. The half flower stamped twice to create a large round flower, along with the beautifully symmetrical leaves. The small tulip stamp is repeat stamped to create a long flower like a delphinium or salvia. Note that the ink does fade back considerably as it dries, creating a soft effect.
  • I wanted the large flower to pop a little more, so I stamped it twice in Polished Pink onto white card and fussy cut both before layering them up over the stamped flower.
  • The sentiment is heat embossed with white powder onto Gorgeous Grape card and fussy cut.
  • The ribbon is White Crinkled Seam Binding, coloured up with the light Polished Pink Stampin’ Blend.
  • The centre of the flower is a large Opal Round, coloured up with Blackberry Bliss and Night of Navy Stampin’ Blends … there is no Gorgeous Grape stampin’ blend.
