World Autism Awareness Day

Welcome to a very special Blog Hop… the World Autism Awareness Day Blog Hop. We are blogging to build awareness of the hurdles that people with autism and others living with autism, face every day.

I must say, that in researching Autism in preparation for this hop, I realise how little I know about the disorder. I am thinking there are a lot of us like that.

For instance, do you know what causes Autism? If you said no, you are not alone. Determining the cause of Autism has been a great mystery since the condition was described. It is widely accepted that genetics play at least some part, however because the spectrum for Autism is so wide, it is not known whether prenatal biological or environmental factors contribute to Autistic behaviours. It seems, ultimately, that there is no one cause of Autism.

And what exactly is Autism?  Autism is a spectrum disorder, presenting in different ways in every person affected, including difficulties with social interaction, communication, repetitive behaviours and sensory sensitivity. The wide spectrum makes it a difficult condition to diagnose. There is no blood test, no scan and no image that can detect autism. Diagnosis relies on behavioural observation and screening.

There is no known cure for autism. However, an early diagnosis and targeted intervention and therapies can assist in reducing the impact of a child’s autism on their day to day lives.

Autism is more common than we realise and I am sure we all know a family or individual living with the disorder. If everyone goes away from this hop with just a little more understanding of austim, the world will be a better place.

If you would like to know more about Autism, here are some resources:-

I found this article really informative and well written.

The colour for Autism is blue, so I have made a blue card today.

Lovely Wishes

Lovely Wishes for World Autism Awareness Day

I have used Night of Navy, Whisper White and Silver for my card.  You can just see the Scattered Sequins Embossing Folder used on the Whisper White layer, giving a subtle texture to the background.

Sunshine Wishes Thinlits Dies

Sunshine Wishes Thinlits Dies
The word LOVE is from the Sunshine Wishes Thinlits Dies. I have diecut from Whisper White Thick Cardstock and then heat embossed it with two coats of Silver Embossing Powder. There is another diecut from Night of Navy behind it to create a fine shadow line.

A happy, unexpected result …

The patterned panel is my favourite element to this card. The image from Lovely Wishes stamp set is repeat stamped and silver embossed onto Whisper White Card. I sponged over it with Night of Navy ink, which has dulled the metallic silver embossing powder to an elegant, grey shade, even after I polished it with a clean cloth.  This was an unexpected effect, but works beautifully. It allowed me to feature that silver embossed die cut word LOVE effectively.
Metallic Doily Lovely Wishes

Extra elements on the card are the small piece of Silver Metallic Foil Doily and a few scattered silver sequins. The Navy Blue Organza ribbon is actually the Whisper White Organza Ribbon from the Occasions Catalogue, coloured up with a Dark Night of Navy Stampin’ Blend. Quick easy and how cool to be able to colour your ribbon to suit your card.
The layout of this card is taken from our current sketch challenge on the Sense of Whimsy VIP customer facebook group page.  If you are a customer and have not yet joined the VIP group, head on over and ask to join. Then you too can participate in the challenge!
