World Autism Awareness Day Blog Hop
![]()

Welcome to a very special Blog Hop… the World Autism Awareness Day Blog Hop. We are blogging to build awareness of the hurdles that people with autism and others living with autism, face every day.
I must say, that in researching Autism in preparation for this hop, I realise how little I know about the disorder. I am thinking there are a lot of us like that.
For instance, do you know what causes Autism? If you said no, you are not alone. Determining the cause of Autism has been a great mystery since the condition was described. It is widely accepted that genetics play at least some part, however because the spectrum for Autism is so wide, it is not known whether prenatal biological or environmental factors contribute to Autistic behaviours. It seems, ultimately, that there is no one cause of Autism.
And what exactly is Autism? Autism is a spectrum disorder, presenting in different ways in every person affected, including difficulties with social interaction, communication, repetitive behaviours and sensory sensitivity. The wide spectrum makes it a difficult condition to diagnose. There is no blood test, no scan and no image that can detect autism. Diagnosis relies on behavioural observation and screening.
There is no known cure for autism. However, an early diagnosis and targeted intervention and therapies can assist in reducing the impact of a child’s autism on their day to day lives.
Autism is more common than we realise and I am sure we all know a family or individual living with the disorder. If everyone goes away from this hop with just a little more understanding of austim, the world will be a better place.
