What Are Dragonfly Wings Made Of?

What ARE Dragonfly Wings made of?  Apparently they are made of chitin (pronounced kite-en), a translucent exo-skeletal substance which supports a system of veins in the wings.

In this instance though, Dragonfly Wings are made of Vellum coloured with Water Colour Pencils! 🙂

I have been working on this card to enter in the Global Design Project Theme Challenge this week. The theme is “Winged Things”.

GDP075 Winged Creatures

There are quite a number of stamp sets and dies in the Stampin’ Up! range that would be suitable for use with this theme, however I chose to use the Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits. Here is my card.

Dragonfly Wings GDP075

I die cut this group of Dragonflies from White Vellum … but first I coloured the vellum with the fantastic new Water Colour Pencils from Stampin’ Up!  I used the die to guide me as to where to scribble four colours (Melon Mambo, Daffodil Delight, Pumpkin Pie, Rich Razzleberry).

Step 1 Watercolour on Vellum

Note that I placed the die blade side up when using as a guide because I will eventually die cut on the non-coloured side of the vellum.

I used a Blender Pen to blend the water colour on the vellum. Vellum doesn’t react too well to water, but it seems to handle the fluid in the blending pen okay.  Note: the water colour really soaks into the tip on the blender pen, so I would keep one pen specifically for use with water colour pencils if you try this technique.  Luckily, you get three blender pens in a pack, so have a Water Colour dedicated pen isn’t too much of a hardship.  You do need to constantly clean the built up water colour out of the nib by cleaning off on scrap paper.

Blender Pen to blend watercolours

Allow the vellum to dry thoroughly before die cutting. Flip the piece over so the watercolour side is on the reverse side, and place die cut on the non-coloured side. You will, no doubt, have left over coloured vellum … perfect for die cutting small flowers so none of this delicious colour is wasted.

Die Cut Dragonflies

The greeting is from the Scenic Sayings stamp Set (Wood Mount or Clear Mount), stamped in Sweet Sugarplum ink with Silver Metallic Thread adhered in a loose, messy circle behind.

Dragonfly Wings Greeting

The centre panel is Water Colour Paper, lightly washed in Smoky Slate ink with an Aqua Painter.
I have white embossed the textured dotty image from Dragonfly Dreams stamp set into the diagonal corners of a Blushing Bride layer. Those little words? …. are cut out of a sheet of Designer Series Paper from the 2016-2018 In Colour Paper Stack … the paper is 12″ x 12″, chock full of a wonderful assortment of random words.

To adhere the dragonflies to the card, I laid them upside down on my Silicone Mat, applied a tiny bit of Multipurpose Liquid Adhesive onto the centre of each dragonfly and then dabbed it with a sponge to spread the glue into a fine film. Quickly place the dragonflies on the card front as the glue dries in an instant. I didn’t worry about getting glue on the wings, I think having them not adhered accentuates the delicate vellum.

Dragonfly Wings Close

Here is another slightly different version … can you spot the difference?  The watercolour background is So Saffron this time and the heart is stamped with Flirty Flamingo!

So many choices with the theme this week … I was going to use the “Hey Chick” Sale-A-Bration stamp set (you know that chicken set!), however chooks and delicate vellum don’t really mix too well! So the Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits it was! 🙂
